“Responsive Feeding” or “Feeding-on-demand” is one of the steps to “successful breastfeeding”. “Feeding-on-demand” means that you start feeding your baby when he is hungry and that you don’t limit breastfeeding times. It is therefore important to know when your baby is hungry. In this handout I will explain different ways in which your baby tells you that he wants to be fed.

During pregnancy your body prepares itself for breastfeeding. Even though breastfeeding is a very natural and logical result of pregnancy, it is also “an art that needs to be learned”. In this handout information on how you can prepare for breastfeeding.
The WHO and UNICEF encourage skin-to-skin (STS) contact between mother and baby soon after birth, and helping mothers to put their baby to the breast right away. “Three Early, One Late” is a term used in Chinese. It stands for “Early STS contact, early suckling, early breastfeeding, and late cord clamping”. In this handout I will explain what “STS contact” means and what the benefits of STS contact with your baby are.

In this handout I will use five of the UNICEF and WHO “Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding” to help you understand what to keep in mind as you start up breastfeeding.
Your body prepares itself to feed the baby during pregnancy. You will notice that your breasts are changing. You even start producing milk whilst pregnant. Once the baby and the placenta are born, there are hormonal changes that will further influence milk production and secretion. Putting the baby to the breasts right after birth and frequently afterwards will not only allow the baby to get plenty of the very valuable colostrum, but will also stimulate the milk to come in. Later milk production will be controlled by the “demand=supply” principle. In this handout I will explain these different phases of the milk production process.
A c-section can make initiating breastfeeding a bit more difficult, but there is no reason that nursing can’t be successful. In this handout information about the challenges of breastfeeding after a c-section and how to overcome these.

Even though a mother can produce good quality and enough breast milk, even when her supply of nutrients is limited, a healthy and well-balanced diet is important to assure good recovery after the birth of the baby and enough energy to help cope with the changes of life. So, what does a healthy diet consist of? Are there certain foods a breastfeeding mother should avoid? What other things should she keep in mind? You will find information about these questions in this handout.

When using a pump to express milk, you might think that the pump should do all of the milk-removal work. However, using your hands before, during and after pumping (also called “hands-on pumping”), can make a big difference; You may remove as much as double the amount of milk. So, how does it work? Expressing breast milk is a skill that you need to learn. In this handout you can read information on how to help you to be effective when expressing milk.
Breast milk is the optimal nutrition for any baby, especially for the premature and sick baby! If your baby was born too early, your milk adapts to the higher needs of the baby. Breastfeeding or giving breast milk to your preterm or sick baby is important for his short- and long-term health and development and it allows you a distinct role in the care of your baby. You might wonder: Should I start expressing milk, even when my baby can’t even receive milk feeds yet? When should I start expressing milk? How often? What kind of pump should I use? How should I use the pump? How much milk should I expect to express each day? How can I stimulate production when I don’t reach the required amount? In this handout I will address these questions.
Tongue-tie (TT), also called ankyloglossia, is when your baby’s tongue is unable to move in normal patterns due to a small band of tissue (frenulum) tying it to the floor of his mouth. During breastfeeding your baby’s tongue movements are important. Restriction of the movements of your baby’s tongue may influence breastfeeding. In this handout I will explain:

Most people understand and accept that a newborn needs to be fed around the clock. But after a couple of weeks or months, people might start asking whether or not your baby is sleeping through the night. If this isn’t the case yet, you might start to worry: Is my milk not good enough? Do I have too little milk? Maybe I should have already started solids? Or should I just force my baby to sleep through the night by letting him cry it out? The questions that need to be answered however are: What are realistic expectations? When can I expect my baby to sleep through the night? What can help me to cope with night feedings? Are there gentle ways to encourage my baby to sleep through the night? These are some of the questions I will discuss in this handout.
